Finding Information on Bird Sightings in our Area
With the widespread acceptance and use of the internet, most Rare Bird Alert telephone hotlines have gone by the wayside. Burroughs Audubon no longer maintains a telephone hotline; however, area birders can stay abreast of local, state and regional bird sightings through the convenience of email and the internet. Institutions of higher learning often maintain Listserv discussion groups on birds and birding as part of their mission to promote education and science, and they make these resources available to the public without charge. The following state discussion groups are sponsored by the ornithological organizations of their respective states and hosted in Kansas by Kansas State University and in Missouri by the University of Missouri – Columbia. The University of Arizona hosts several regional birding discussion groups.
Rather than receiving individual postings in your email inbox, and for those who don't wish to subscribe to a list, birders can browse through recent sightings at the archive websites of their lists of interest.
